Where can I download Sims 5?
You’re probably here because you’re wondering where to download The Sims 5’s base game or expansion packs for PC, Mac, or console.
At this moment (2023), The Sims 5 isn’t available yet. The good news is that the game is currently being developed, so it’s coming soon!
So, where can you download Sims 5 games once they’re out? Here are the options:
Download via the EA app or EA Play
The primary platform for downloading Sims 5 games will be the EA app (formerly called Origin). This is a game platform (also called a client) made by Electronic Arts (EA) that lets you purchase, download, install, and play all Sims games, including the upcoming fifth generation of The Sims.
Besides that, The game might also be available through EA Play. This is EA’s subscription service, which has a monthly fee.
In order to download games through the EA app or EA Play, you’ll need an EA account. You can register for free here. If you’re already a member, you can purchase games by logging in to your EA account.
You can find out more about downloading Sims 5 games through the EA app here. More step-by-step guides will be coming soon.
Can I download Sims 5 via other third-party platforms like Steam and Amazon?
Will it be possible to download The Sims 5’s base game and expansions through third-party platforms like Steam, Amazon, and others? That’s a good question!
There are a few ways to legally download Sims games on a PC, Mac, or console. We’ll give you more detailed steps once The Sims 5 is out.
Download options for PC (Windows) and Mac (MacOS):
- EA App (EA’s game platform, which was called Origin before)
- EA Play (EA’s subscription service)
- Steam (a third-party game platform; for installing and playing games, the EA app is required)
Download options for consoles (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S):
- PlayStation Store (the game library for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4)
- Xbox Store (the game library for Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One)
These are the main places for downloading Sims 5 games on different platforms. Besides that, there are other places where you can purchase these games.
The Sims 5’s base game and expansions (DLC) will probably also be made available through other third-party platforms. These stores include Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, Walmart, and other online retailers.
Besides that, CD key sites may also be offering these games. Among them are stores like MMOGA, CDKeys, Instant Gaming, Gamivo, CJS CD Keys, SCDKEY, Allkeyshop, Eneba, G2A, HRKGame, and more. These platforms and sites are all legit. You can check Trustpilot reviews to confirm this.
So, why would someone buy games through third-party platforms like Amazon, Steam, or CD key sites?
The main reason is that they’re often cheaper than EA’s own stores. They frequently offer big discounts on games.
Once you’ve purchased games through a third-party platform, you will receive an email with more details. This should include a unique activation code (serial key) that needs to be redeemed within the EA app. Once that’s done, you’re ready to download, install, and play the game.
When can I download Sims 5?
At this moment (2023), the official release date for the fifth installment of The Sims has yet to be revealed.
We do know that the game is currently under development. This was confirmed at the Behind The Sims Summit in October 2022, where Lyndsay Pearson (Vice President of Franchise Creative for The Sims at Maxis) shared the first details about this:
Pearson mentioned: “Today marks the start of our journey over the next few years. Our working title for this new generation is Project Rene.”
In January 2023, Grant Rodiek (Game Director for The Sims 5) mentioned that the game is “Years out.” This indicates that a release in 2023 won’t happen.
A release in 2024 or 2025 seems very likely, though. Read more about this on the release page.

Where can I buy Sims 5?
Currently (2023), The Sims 5 isn’t available yet. But when the game comes out, you’ll be able to purchase it through various online retailers. There is no information about stores selling physical copies yet.
EA app and EA Play
The fifth edition of The Sims will definitely be available through the EA app (also known as Origin) and EA Play, which is EA’s paid membership service.
Other online retailers
Besides that, it’s expected that Sims 5 games will be sold through various third-party platforms and sites, including Steam, Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, Walmart, and CD key sites such as MMOGA, CDKeys, Instant Gaming, Gamivo, CJS CD Keys, SCDKEY, Allkeyshop, Eneba, G2A, HRKGame, and others.
More information about where you can purchase the fifth generation will be added to the site later! When pre-orders are available, we’ll also share information about this.
Is it possible to download Sims 5 for free?
As you may already know, The Sims 5 isn’t yet available (as of 2023). The good news is that it’s coming! But when the game comes out, will it be free to download?
Some hints that popped up in June 2023 suggest that it will. This, however, hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, so please take this with a grain of salt.
Based on a job posting, Maxis, the company developing The Sims 5, is looking for a new employee to work on Project Rene, a “free-to-enter” game. Project Rene is the working title for The Sims 5.
This hint suggests that the next generation of The Sims may become a free-to-play game. This might mean that the base game will be free and that it will include microtransactions. With microtransactions, players can exchange real money to buy extra items, features, and other things.
Even if the base game of The Sims 5 will be free, it’s unlikely that expansion packs will be offered at no cost. EA is a commercially driven company that needs to make money.

Where can I find the cheapest Sims 5 games? Are there any discounts available?
There’s no doubt that Sims games can be expensive! Luckily, there are ways to find cheaper Sims games. We’ve listed them below. Once The Sims 5 is available, you can check out these options to make sure you never have to pay too much! Pricing details have yet to be revealed.
So what are the cheapest download options, then?
CD key stores: cheap games all year round
These online stores typically offer the cheapest Sims games all year round. They include MMOGA, CDKeys, Instant Gaming, Gamivo, CJS CD Keys, SCDKEY, Allkeyshop, Eneba, G2A, HRKGame, and others. These are all legit. You can check Trustpilot reviews to verify this.
EA app: sales on a regular basis
Even though the EA app (also known as Origin) is usually one of the most expensive places for buying Sims games, they sometimes have sales with big discounts. The biggest sales happen around Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and other holidays.
Other retailers: sales on a regular basis
Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart are other stores that often have sales. These sales can occur at any time. The best deals are on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and other special days.
Can I download Sims 5 on a PC or Mac computer?
Once the fifth generation of The Sims is available, you’ll be able to download it on the latest PCs with good specs. In October 2022, Lyndsay Pearson from Maxis confirmed that the game would be coming to PC.
This includes Windows-based laptops and desktop computers from brands like Acer, Alienware, ASUS, Dell, GIGABYTE, HP, Lenovo, MEDION, Microsoft, MSI, Samsung, and others.
There is no official confirmation about a Mac version of the game, but the newest MacBooks and iMacs will likely be able to run the game, since The Sims 5’s predecessor, The Sims 4, was also launched on Mac.
Can I download Sims 5 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series X?
There are currently (2023) no official details about a console version of The Sims 5.
However, since the game will become a cross-platform experience and PC and mobile versions have already been announced, EA and Maxis will likely add more platforms to this list.
Since The Sims 4 can be played on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, it’s likely that the fifth generation of The Sims will also be coming to the latest consoles.
This means you can probably download the game on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S as soon as it comes out.
Can I download Sims 5 after purchasing a physical copy?
Whether or not The Sims 5’s base game and add-ons will be available in physical form is still unknown (as of 2023). When looking at The Sims 4, we can see that physical copies are becoming less common. EA and Maxis are moving away from physical disks.
Nowadays, most physical games no longer come with a CD or DVD. Instead of that, the box usually contains a unique activation code. This lets players download the game through the EA app.
It’s unlikely that The Sims 5’s physical release will include a CD or DVD. Similar to The Sims 4, the game’s box will likely include an activation code that allows gamers to download the game through the EA app.
How long does it take to download Sims 5?
It’s hard to predict how long it will take to download The Sims 5’s base game or upcoming expansions. This depends on several aspects, including your internet speed, the size of the game or games you download, and the speed of your computer.
As soon as we have more details about this, we’ll share them on this site.
What do I need to consider before downloading Sims 5 games?
Before downloading new games, such as the fifth generation of The Sims, it’s always good to keep a few things in mind. We’ve listed them here:
- Compatibility: Check if your device can actually run the game, because some devices may not be able to do so. The game should run smoothly on the newest high-end Windows PCs and Mac computers running MacOS. The same counts for the latest consoles, like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The latest iPhones and Android devices should also be able to run the game. It’s possible that some platforms, like Chromebooks, won’t be supported.
- System requirements: Check the official system requirements for the game to ensure that your computer meets the minimum specifications needed to run the game smoothly. This includes factors like processor speed, RAM, storage space, and graphic capabilities.
- Stable internet connection: Make sure to check if your internet connection is stable and fast. Downloading expansion packs onto your computer may take some time, so a fast connection is recommended.
- Budget: Determine your budget for purchasing games. At first, it may not seem like a lot, but when you add all the expansion packs, it could become a very expensive hobby. To get the most out of your money, keep an eye out for sales, discounts, or bundle offers.
- Official sources: We strongly suggest you only buy games from official, authorized platforms like the EA app, EA Play, or other reputable retailers. This ensures that you will receive legitimate copies. On top of that, it’s much safer as well. Torrents, cracks, or Zip files often contain malware or viruses.
- The base game is limited: When a new version of The Sims comes out, it is usually still very limited, especially in the first few months or years after it comes out. Expansion packs will improve the game and add more features and ways to play, but it may be a while before some packs with popular themes like toddlers, seasons, and pets are released.
- Reviews and ratings: Check reviews and ratings from other players to get an idea of the game’s quality, performance, and overall experience. This will give you valuable insights and assist you in making wise decisions when buying video games.
